Hair Replacement Recovery

Like with any kind of surgical procedure there is a recovery time that you must budget for, if you expect to get the results you want. In the case of hair replacement surgery there are two factors that you must take into account. One is the painkiller that you will take after the procedure. There are certain elements you should not mix with the pills.

There are also the physical effects of the surgery. Many of these are expected and your doctor will let you know exactly what to look for. Your doctor will also tell what to look for if your body rejects the surgery, this is a little more serious.

1. Do not take Aspirin, Ibuprofen or alcohol to numb the discomfort. This could lead to excessive bleeding. Your doctor will prescribe one of the following pain relievers and naturally you should not drink booze while taking these, as it will put too much strain on your liver.

  • Prednisone
  • Vicodin
  • Cephalexin

2. Avoid excessive physical activity such as weightlifting, sports and running. Contact sports could result in losing the new hair, and the excessive blood flow to the head could damage the tender new hairs.

3. There may be some slight bleeding after the surgery. To help this apply light pressure to the bleeding areas with a moist towel. If the bleeding persists you should talk to your doctor.

4. Applying light ice packs, four times a day, to the transplanted area is also very important. His will ensure that the swelling subsides enough for the transplants to heal. I would suggest taking two or three days off work to attend to this.

5. Do not wash your hair for 48 hours after surgery. This could damage the transplants.

6. You should avoid extreme exposure to the sun and chlorinated water for a few weeks after your surgery; again this stress could damage the new transplants.

7. Scabs are common after any hair replacement procedure. These will fall off as your head heals. You may notice that hairs are falling out with the scabs. This is normal. New hair will grow back and take their place.

8. Lastly, bear in mind that hair transplants are a long-term investment. Your new hair must be given time to grow. Just be patient and in due time you will notice the results that you are hoping for.
