The human body is a funny thing. It is designed to perform the tasks required to stay alive but it can also strongly affect a person's sense of self. The saying a person has no choice over their family can also be applied to their bodies. Whereas, an attractive and healthy physical body can boost a person's self-esteem and be a point of pride, many individuals struggle with their bodies. Self-confidence issues often transpire in people that are uncomfortable in their bodies. Worst of all, this self-consciousness over their bodies can negatively impact a person's lives, as it subconsciously affects their actions.

This relationship between people and their bodies have launched a thousand industries. From high-maintenance gyms to diet crazes based on interesting theories on nutrition, there are a myriad of products and services designed to help people create the changes in their bodies that they crave. Everyone has an image of their appearance in their minds that they want to obtain and this desire to change physical appearance continues to exist.

Unfortunately many of the products and services that have been derived from a desire to change body shape create changes that do not meet people expectations. However, a scientific method of creating changes in our physical bodies has become increasingly popular. This method is plastic surgery and it utilizes medical technology and the latest surgical procedures to produce the changes in a person's body that they desire.

One of the most popular plastic surgery techniques involves breast implants. Breast implants are used in breast augmentation surgery, which was the second most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in 2003. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (APAS) reports that in 2003, a total of 280,401 obtained breast implants through breast augmentation surgery.

In breast augmentation treatment (or medically augmentation mammoplasty), a patient is able to enhance the size and shape of their breast tissue through the implementation of breast implants. Breast implants are predominantly obtained by women who want to change the way their appearance. Although many critics argue that breast implants are an unnecessary cosmetic treatment, these critics often do not consider the most popular reasons why breast implants are popular.

Many women seek breast implants to correct a perceived flaw in their body. Some women want to correct the disproportionate shape and/or size between their breasts. Others undergo this surgical treatment to give their bodies an overall more proportional shape. Regardless of the reason for a patient's desire to obtain breast implants, it is important to recognize that there are a number of appropriate reasons for a person to undergo this treatment. As the plastic surgery industry has undergone unprecedented waves of innovation over the last decade, acquiring breast implants through medical treatment has become faster, safer, and more efficient. Its popularity has skyrocketed, which is evident in the 12 percent rise in breast implants patients in 2003 from 2002.
