Eyelid Surgery

Did you know that eyelid skin is the thinnest skin on your face and is likely to be the first facial feature to show the signs of aging? Things like bag under the eyes or wrinkled folds of skin on the upper eyelids sometimes make person look tired and older. There's however a certain lastic surgery that can reshape the eyelid area and improve appearance.

Eyelift or blepharoplasty, is a plastic surgery that basically removes excess skin as well as fat on upper and/or lower eyelids. It is commonly done for cosmetic reasons but it is also know to be done to improve vision if the skin folds interfere with regular vision.

The eyelift is one of the most popular procedures in the field of cosmetic surgery.

These procedures are usually carried out by board certified professionals known as oculoplastic surgeons. Ocuplastic surgeons specialize in plastic and reconstructive surgery of the eye.

The eyelift surgeries can also be performed by general plastic surgeons with specialization in ocuplasty or ear-nose-throat. Some dermatologists as well general ophthalmologists may also be qualified to carry out this type of surgery.

In most cases, during the surgery, the surgeon will reconstruct the eyelid crease to further improve the appearance of the eye. Sometimes this is requested by people of Oriental descent in order to make their eyes more Western-looking. Furthermore, excess skin and fat can also be removed from the lower eyelids - bags under the eyes and drooping eyebrows may be lifted through the plastic surgery.

The surgery for drooping eyebrows involves lifting the brow through the same incision made for the eyelift. Also, the brow can be lifted by removing excess skin above the brow or on the scalp directly. In some cases droopy eyelids also may be corrected by tightening eye muscles. All of these procedures can actually be done during one surgery.

Eyelifts create smoother area around the eyes and give the face a more youthful look and a brow lift will often result in a more alert and fresher appearance.

As with most types of plastic surgery procedures, eyelid lift is safe and complications are rare. It is normal to have some bruising and swelling for a week or so after the eyelift surgery is done and things like cold compresses applied to the eyes can help reduce these problems. Eyelift surgery is more common in older patients due to their desire to correct drooping eyelids. These patients also undergo other types of enhancement procedures, such as refractive cataract surgery, a combination procedure to correct cataracts and presbyopia.
