Saline Breast Implants

When it comes to discussing breast implants, the most common type of breast implants are saline breast implants. Saline is a salt-water solution that is usually used as the filler material in breast implants. Breast implants are made up of a silicone shell that contains some sort of filler material. Prior to its ban in 1992 by the FDA, silicone gel was the most common filler material used in breast implants. However, since that time, saline is now the most commonly used filler material, as it provides assurances of safety that silicone gel is unable to.

A saline breast implant utilizes saline, which is similar to the fluid that makes up the majority of the human body. Although saline breast implants do not provide the same natural look and feel of silicone breast implants, studies have shown that women with saline breast implants are less likely to have a medical complication caused by the implants than women with silicone breast implants.

Besides being more safe, saline breast implants are extremely versatile. Obtainable to the general public without a medical requirement, saline breast implants can vary in terms of shell surface, volume, shell thickness, profile, shape, and expandable implants. The size of a saline breast implant will range from 120cc to 850cc, although patients that want an implant that is larger than 850cc is able to obtain a custom made saline breast implant that fulfills the patient's desired size of implant.

The most commonly used implant material by cosmetic surgeons, saline breast implants have an attractive look that still provides the look and feel of a natural breast. Many individuals currently have saline breast implants for a number of reasons. Whether it is to fix a disproportion between breasts or to achieve an overall more proportional look for their body, many plastic surgery patients love their saline breast implants.

In addition to their look, the saline breast implant provides immense safety for your overall health. One of the biggest issues that a patient undergoing breast augmentation must face is the effect of a possible rupture in their implants to their bodies. Although breast augmentation procedures have improved rapidly over the last twenty years, there are still some instances of rupture. Ruptures are usually caused through injury although there are some instances where the normal compressions and movement of your breast and implant could cause the silicone shell to leak.

With saline breast implants, you do not have to worry about the possible negative repercussions of saline traveling through your body. Although the saline breast implant will deflate following a rupture, saline is a salt-water solution that the body will harmlessly absorb following a rupture without any consequences to your health.
