Micro Dermabrasion Procedure

One of the most effective methods for individuals to combat the effects of aging is through microdermabrasion (sometimes known as micro dermabrasion or micro-dermabrasion). This technique is a quick, efficient, and convenient method for individuals to combat facial imperfections caused by such factors as sun exposure and aging. A popular procedure, many individuals that are interested in micro dermabrasion often have concerns related to the treatment.

First of all, candidates for the microdermabrasion procedure are individuals with:

  • A skin texture that is dull, oily, or leathery
  • Enlarged pores
  • Clogged pores
  • Fine lines
  • Acne scarring
  • Pigment irregularities

A non-invasive and non-wounding technique that is applied to the skin surface, the micro-dermabrasion treatment can be successfully used on a person's neck, arms, and hands. A procedure that has enjoyed widespread and sustained popularity in Europe, the microdermabrasion procedure is accumulating acclaim in America.

During the microdermabrasion procedure, an individual can expect to have the treatment completed between 15 and 45 minutes. However, patients that are having a micro dermabrasion procedure performed on the neck and upper chest area, the treatment length will last up to an hour. This treatment does not require the use of anesthesia and the patient should not feel any pain, although they may feel a stinging sensation around the eye area.

Utilizing a specialized tool that passes a fine mist of aluminum dioxide crystals over the skin's surface, the plastic surgeon is able to adjust the intensity of the treatment to the customized needs and expectations of individual patients. The versatility offered by the micro-dermabrasion tool is evident by the fact that it can achieve a light buffing effect that is used to treat surface imperfections or achieve a deep level of exfoliation that is used to treat deeper skin imperfections. This tool evenly removes the top layers of a patient's skin and rejuvenates the patient by revealing a fresh new layer of cells.

Feeling similar to a massage, the microdermabrasion procedure is minimally invasive. Patients may notice that there is a mild redness that will subside within a few hours following the micro dermabrasion procedure and other than that there are no lingering effects. Before the micro-dermabrasion treatment is completed, the plastic surgeon will apply a re-hydrating toner, moisturizer, and sunscreen to the patient's face. As a precaution, it is recommended that the microdermabrasion patient avoid direct sun exposure for the week following the procedure. Additionally, it is recommended that patients following this treatment avoid liquid foundations or pressed powder foundations for 24 hours. However, other forms of makeup such eye makeup and lipstick can be applied immediately.
