Dermabrasion of The Face

One of the most popular skin resurfacing procedures is dermabrasion of the face.

Dermabrasion of the face is typically used to treat wrinkles, imperfections and deep scarring left by bouts of acne. The idea behind the procedure is to remove the top layers of scarred and wrinkled skin so that the growth of new tissue will be encouraged and the facial skin will appear smoother and less damaged.

The first step in having dermabrasion of the face is going in for a consultation with a plastic surgeon. You will want to make sure that you choose a surgeon who specializes in the sort of procedure that you are after and you will also want to make sure that you select a surgeon who makes you feel comfortable. When you go in for your initial consultation explain the results you are looking for and make sure that your surgeon answers any questions that you may have about the procedure.

Your procedure will probably be performed in a hospital or surgical center. Most dermabrasion procedures are done on an outpatient basis, but if you have extensive work done you may be required to stay at the hospital or surgical center overnight.

Dermabrasion of the face is usually performed under general or local anesthetic, depending on the severity of the work that needs to be done. The surgeon will typically begin the procedure by applying antiseptic to your face after which he or she will use a hand-held electric tool with a rotating head to scrape away the pitted, damaged outer layer of skin. Usually the procedure takes about an hour and a half.

If you plan to have dermabrasion of the face don't plan any major events directly afterwards. You will probably want to stay out of the public eye after dermabrasion because your face is likely to be swollen and red after surgery. You will probably have trouble moving your mouth so eating and talking can be painful and difficult. As you begin to heal a crust or scab will form on the areas that have been treated with dermabrasion and your face will probably become extremely itchy. Once the scabbing falls off it will reveal a new layer of skin underneath, but even in this stage your skin will appear pink.

It usually takes a few months for patients to completely heal after dermabrasion of the face, but the results can be incredible.

For many people the procedure allows patients to regain the self-esteem that was worn away by years spent living with facial imperfections. Dermabrasion can give you the opportunity to truly put your best face forward.
