Liposuction Risks
Liposuction is considered the safest of all plastic surgery operations. As
long as both the patient and surgeon do not rush into it, and the facilities
are properly equipped, then there shouldn't be anything to worry excessively
about.
Of course, since it's still a medical procedure there are some definite liposuction
risks that you will be exposed to.
You can avoid a lot of them by choosing the right surgeon. He or she should
be accredited by a board or medical organization for meeting the requirements
of basic training and additional training for body contouring. Since most outpatient
procedures are done outside of a hospital, you should ensure that your surgeon
is certified to do liposuction at a hospital as well.
If you are removing a large volume of fat, you must make sure that your surgeon
has advanced skills to deal with the additional problems. Operations that require
multiple surgeries at once or complicated ones in sensitive areas also carry
additional risk and you should talk to your surgeon about similar operations
that he or she have completed.
Even an experienced surgeon in a modern facility cannot prevent every complication
from arising. Any combination of events could mean a longer healing period,
the formation of clots underneath your skin, serious blood loss, fluid in the
lungs, burns, permanent damage to your nerves and internal organs, or a bad
reaction to one of the drugs you will be taking.
Many of the newer techniques have long-term effects that have not been thoroughly
studied. Ultrasound and laser techniques may be more efficient, but no one knows
exactly if there are complications decades later.
Even though liposuction incisions are small now, you can't expect them to fully
heal or disappear. Some incisions never heal properly and can leave imperfections
on the skin. Older patients don't have enough skin elasticity to accommodate
the missing fat. Additional surgeries like skin lifts could be necessary to
complete your transformation.
As you can see, there are a lot of things that just can't be accounted for
before the surgery. Only an extensive dialogue with your surgeon before and
after the surgery can ensure that you will receive the attention that you require.
Remember, you are pursuing this for your own benefit, so it's in your own best
interests to make sure that everything is going according to plan.
