Ear Pinning Surgery Info
Protruding ears or deformed ears are the result of genetics and can't be prevented.
Sometimes, even an injury can significantly damage an ear to the point where
it is clearly deformed. For these people, the endless stares and whispers can
be both humiliating and painful. It's even worse for kids who have to endure
name-calling, teasing, and ridicule. Don't put your kids through this sort of
trauma if they have protruding or deformed ears. If you've got some flaws in
your ear, you too can be healed in a matter of days.
Cosmetic ear surgery has been around for a while now and surgeons have already
completed thousands of successful operations. That's because doctors have isolated
the majority of defects to the cartilage (or lack of it) in the upper ear. The
most common method for cosmetic ear surgery was an ear pinning technique. With
this method, the ear is effectively drawn and held closer to the head, while
the cartilage is reshaped and held together in a more pleasant form.
An ear pinning surgery can be done at your local surgeon's office. It's also
performed as an outpatient procedure with only local anesthetics. The total
length of the operation lasts about two and a half hours.
The surgery is performed under local anesthetic with sedatives for adults,
and usually general anesthetic for children (unless they're exceptionally brave
and calm). An incision shaped like an American football is made in the back
of the ear. The skin is parted to reveal the underlying cartilage. This is when
a suture is usually made to bring the ear closer to the head. Sometimes a greater
shift can be achieved by cutting some of the cartilage away to provide more
slack. Depending on the severity of the case, some permanent sutures may be
required.
When the surgery is complete, the wound is closed and the ear is covered with
a pressure bandage that goes around the entire head. The patient can get up
and walk, but should be driven home by someone else. After a few days the large
ungainly bandage is replaced with a light dressing. Stitches for the incision
are removed after a few weeks along with the dressing. Most patients should
return to school or work in a week, but should any activities that could bend
the ear for a few months.
Compared to most other cosmetic surgeries, the complications for ear pinning
surgery are few. Blood clots can arise but will disappear after a few weeks.
They can also be removed with a needle if it's urgent.
Ear pinning surgery is a popular procedure for fixing an obvious ear defect.
Patients are usually very happy with the results. Talk to a plastic surgeon
