Chin Augmentation Surgery

What is known as a "weak" chin can make the nose look larger or give the unpleasant appearance of a big neck. In most cases chin augmentation lets patients achieve the profile they find more pleasing. This is done through either creating a more defined chin, or a smaller one via corrective surgical procedure. By using chin augmentation surgery, a cosmetic surgeon can create more balanced relationship between the facial features.

During the chin augmentation procedure, the surgeon uses synthetics or biologicals to augment the bone structure. It is quite common for a chin augmentation to be performed in conjunction with a nose job thus allowing the surgeon to create an ideal profile for the patient undergoing the procedure. There are two major kinds of chin augmentation surgery: surgery and injectables.

The procedure used in a chin augmentation will mean that a surgical facility will be used, there will be an anesthesiologist and the patient may be required to stay in the hospital over night. Chin augmentation surgery is, in most cases, performed in order to insert an implant into the tissue just on top of the jaw. Once the surgery for chin augmentation is completed, patients may wear a support brace to let the tissues and implant to heal properly. Usually there is bruising and swelling for the first 5 to 7 days after chin augmentation surgery.

By using injectables to perform a chin augmentation a surgical team is usually not needed and there's no need for general anesthesia or operating room. Thus the cost for this form of chin augmentation through injectables can be significantly lower than the expense of surgery.

To augment the chin, the doctor will start by making an incision either in the natural crease line just under the chin or inside the mouth, where gum and lower lip meet. Next, through gently stretching this tissue, the surgeon creates a space where an implant can be inserted. Implants are available in different shapes and sizes; this allows custom fitting of the implant to the specifics of the face. After implantation, the surgeon uses fine sutures to close the incision. When the incision is inside the mouth, no scarring is visible.

Whatever chin augmentation procedure, you decide to go with, the opportunity to create a more appealing appearance is the same. It's a good idea to learn more about chin augmentation. In order to find out if you are an appropriate candidate for this procedure you should probably discuss this with a plastic surgery consultant or board-certified plastic surgeon who has performed these types of procedures before.
